Alliance for Sustainable Impact Delta Air Lines + Someone Somewhere

Delta Air Lines x Someone Somewhere

We have a big surprise that we've been keeping for several months. We've started an incredible collaboration with Delta Air Lines! Today, after several months of intense work, planning, and organization, we can finally announce what it means for us to collaborate with one of the largest airlines in the world and the impact we seek to generate with this alliance. Stay until the end and discover what we'll have this 2022.
It all began a few months ago when Samuel Sibble, Delta's Director of Supply Chain, learned about us, our mission, and our social work, thanks to Travel & Leisure. Convinced of the importance of generating a social, economic, and environmental impact, he said, "We have to do something with them." That's how a conversation began that, over time, made the star product of this collaboration possible: a new Amenity Kit that all Delta One® passengers will be able to enjoy starting in 2022.

Amenity Kit Someone Somewhere + Delta

A kit as special as the person who makes it

And why is this Kit so special? Between Delta Air Lines and Someone Somewhere, we wanted to create a product that is completely functional, reusable, and, of course, as sustainable as possible! Not only because of what's inside, but mainly because of how the Kit is made. It's a case made using a backstrap loom in vulnerable communities in Michoacán and Oaxaca. Through this technique, hundreds of artisans keep the tradition alive and create something unique that will travel around the world. With this alliance, we will be generating more than 500,000 hours of work per year and impacting the thousands of people who make this kit a reality.

Low environmental impact materials make the difference

But it's not just the artisanal aspect that makes a difference; it's also important to mention that 50% of the cotton in the threads is reclaimed material, meaning it's reused from scraps from other uses, and we mix it with 50% cotton from local sources.
Is that where the novelty ends? No. We also want to tell you that the inner and back lining of the Kit is made from 100% local cotton fabric, a fabric that, to avoid increased water usage and pigments, was left in its natural unbleached color, without any treatment, on the inside. So you enjoy the great resistance of Mexican looms knowing that they represent significant savings in water and resources. And also in electricity, since the backstrap loom does not require a single watt of electricity to operate. In addition, the front label with our name is made with coconut fibers, thus avoiding the use of animal leather.
As if that weren't enough, inside the Amenity Kit, you'll find some surprises made with low-environmental-impact materials that also reduce the presence of single-use plastics by up to 90,000 pounds: a bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste from Humble Co., a lip balm and hand cream from Grown Alchemist, and a second product made by us: an Eye Mask to cover your eyes and catch some sleep on those long journeys. This sleep mask is also made with the artisanal fabric that your Kit carries, but also, we use 80% reclaimed cotton and 20% recycled PET fibers in the fabric that touches your eyes. Its elastic band and frames are made of polyester, and the label with our name is also made from coconut leather.

Connect with the artisans

We couldn't forget to mention that in your Kit you'll find a label with the name of the artisan who made it, as well as a QR code that will take you to Meet The Artisan, a site where you can discover more information about the craftsmanship, its origin, and much more, and of course, thank the artisans for their magnificent works of art. All passengers flying with Delta One® will be able to search for the story of their Kit's artisan during the flight. This has been a rewarding task that we have also carried out to bring the stories of artisans in their communities closer to final consumers.

The cherry on top of this project is that for the first time, we managed to create a solid collaboration with the communities of Pátzcuaro and Uruapan in Michoacán. Although we had already collaborated hand-in-hand with workshops in that state, our alliance with Delta meant expanding our network of collaborating artisans, and for them, it meant restarting some looms that had been idle and even commissioning the construction of new ones to meet the fabric demand that came in recent months.

Sustainable impact

Samuel Sibble, at the launch of this project, said: "At Delta, we challenge ourselves to think more and more about how and where we source our products." For the company, it's a decisive moment to take actions that allow us to live in a less polluted world, with greater economic competitiveness, and where resources are available for everyone. He added: "we have the opportunity and responsibility to make value-based business decisions that not only fulfill our vision but also positively impact our communities." For Delta, it's not only important to provide a first-class experience, but also to become sustainable, contribute its grain of sand for the planet, and generate a lasting social impact that truly supports vulnerable communities.

We are proud of the opportunity that opens up for both us and Delta by working together. If in 2020 we reached 50,000 hours of work generated for artisans, and in 2021 it was 136,000, then for 2022 to achieve more than double that per year is incredible, a unique achievement that drives us to continue growing and impacting more and more lives. We aim to continue fulfilling our commitment each year as a certified B-Corp (meaning we meet international sustainability parameters) and the commitment we signed with more than 40 companies to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030.

We want to be part of the efforts to reduce the carbon footprint we humans leave. An excellent way is to shop intelligently and consciously, reduce the waste we generate, and use products that last longer and pollute less. Don't forget to visit our website and check out our social media.
