We transport you to Hueyapan, Puebla.
There are 15 million artisans in Mexico and on this occasion, we visited a magical place in the Sierra Norte of Puebla; Hueyapan, where half of its population is considered indigenous. We visited the artisans who collaborate with Someone Somewhere to learn more about the artisanal process in this community.

Amidst pastel colors, mountains, and mist, you'll find the most delicious "tamales pintitos" we've ever tasted (these are corn tamales with tender beans). Also circulating in the snack market are red tamales, chicken tostadas, and "gorditas de nata" filled with "cajeta."

We spent a full day with the artisans from the group "Saber para la vida" (Knowledge for Life), where we learned even more about their beginnings, their techniques, their traditions, and their dreams. Emi, one of the artisans, told us she has 12 siblings and a 13-year-old son named Gerardo. What she likes most about Hueyapan is the vegetation, especially the pine trees, oak trees, and avocado trees. She enjoys listening to the radio while cooking small tamales with molcajete sauce, and her biggest dream is to become a great artisan in Hueyapan and other parts of Mexico.

Listening to Emi, Magda, and all their companions as they embroidered the sample shirts, the sun went down to become a sunset, and the bells rang for 6:00 pm mass.

It's incredible to learn about and experience being part of a community where strangers greet each other on the streets, where you can enjoy good ice cream, and time passes very differently. Hueyapan is special, especially because of the artisans who live and breathe its air. We are always proud to collaborate with such a place full of talent and hope. You can learn more about how we work here.
