The word "artisan" comes from the Italian artigiano (meaning 'one who practices a mechanical art'), and this term comes from the Latin ars, artis. Latin gave us "art" in Spanish, which comes from the Indo-European root ar (meaning 'to move, to adjust, to make act'). It was only from the end of the 15th century, during the Italian Renaissance, that the distinction between artisan and artist was first made; this difference gave rise to the figure of the artist. The objects produced usually have an aesthetic and/or utilitarian value. The artisan can sell their creations, either personally or to third parties, which they produce in their "workshop," on the street, at a craft stall, or in the workshop of a master artisan, when working as an employee.
